Two days after the start of the German presidency of the EU Council, Chancellor Angela Merkel receives French President Emmanuel Macron in Berlin, a historical ally with whom he recently finalized the proposal for a post-pandemic European recovery fund.

Macron is back from the electoral defeat of the French municipalities, which have recorded a record rate of abstention and a success of the Green candidates, while those of the Republique en marche have lost almost everywhere. The chancellor is preparing to face the last difficult challenge of leading Europe in an unprecedented crisis phase, before leaving office.

Before leaving for Berlin, the French president receives 150 representatives of the French climate convention, and environmental statements are expected, according to what the Elysée has revealed.

The themes of the "German semester" at the head of the EU Council, the first for 13 years, range from the "green deal" in Brussels to Brexit, but it will also deal with the migration issue and relations with China and the United States. But the Covid crisis and the dramatic ecological consequences on the old continent, which "shocked our world", as the chancellor herself said some time ago, will be at the center of the agenda.

Macron was greeted by the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, for the bilateral talks on the EU, at Meseberg Castle, outside Berlin. Among the various topics, the two leaders will also address the ongoing negotiations in Europe on the Recovery Fund.
