The outgoing Conservative head of state topped the first round of Sunday's presidential election in Poland. Andrzej Duda will oppose the Liberal candidate in the second round on July 12.

The outgoing president obtained 43.7% of the vote, after counting the ballots from 99.78% of the polling stations, according to the almost complete results published by the Electoral Commission (PKW) on Monday. In the second ballot he will face the mayor of Warsaw, Rafal Trzaskowski, who came second with 30.3% of the vote, according to the same count.

A campaign disrupted by the pandemic

The independent candidate, Rafal Holownia, obtained 13.9% of the votes, while none of the other eight candidates crossed the threshold of ten percent of the votes. According to the electoral commission, the results of the missing polling stations will not significantly influence the final score. The participation rate was 64.4%, according to PKW. The final results will be published no later than Tuesday morning, the commission said.

The election campaign was dominated by concerns about the state of democracy and social issues, as Poland faces its first recession since the end of communism, following the coronavirus pandemic. The coronavirus crisis forced the authorities to postpone the poll from May to June.
