Four trees have already been felled along avenue Janvier in Rennes. - J. Gicquel / 20 Minutes

"We won a first battle but not yet the war". President of La nature en ville, Pascal Branchu can smile this Monday. In the morning, the administrative court of Rennes suspended the decree taken by the city on April 3, 2019 to have 25 trees felled on avenue Janvier. The association had brought the case to justice to request the suspension of this decision.

This fall, Pascal Branchu had already filed a contentious appeal and an interim suspension following the felling of the first four trees on October 21 and 22 along the avenue located opposite the station of Rennes. "The city did not meet the posting deadline which is two months before cutting down the trees," said Pascal Branchu at the hearing on November 7 before the administrative court. According to him, "no serious reason" justified the slaughter of these four charms which were "in good health" and represented "no danger".

"The city can develop the avenue without cutting trees"

But the trees were already felled. The judge in summary proceedings finally agreed with him this Monday, effectively blocking for the moment any slaughter on the avenue which is under construction. "I am not opposed to the development of the avenue but the city can do it without cutting trees," said the activist, stressing "that it is a matter of public health".

When contacted, the city indicated that it had taken note of the decision rendered today. The services must examine the terms within fifteen days to determine the action to be taken. "
