The first electoral debate of the post-Covid-19 era left a historic photo on Monday in Galicia's public radio television . Unprecedented was the number of candidates, seven, of whom three represent extra-parliamentary forces in the Chamber, but also the measures of social distance that kept them 1.6 meters apart and, above all, that the pandemic and the political management of the same at the Galician and Spanish level monopolized the event.

In practice, it became a six against one in which the PSOE, BNG, Marea Galeguista, Galicia En Común, Ciudadanos and Vox criticized the role of the Xunta of the PP of Alberto Núñez Feijóo and he defended himself accusing them of trying to "rewrite the history "of the last three and a half months . They only coincided in a memory of the 619 deaths from the pandemic in the community.

The five candidates and two candidates measured their strength and brought out the defects of the opponent in a struggle to capture the vote of the 31.6% of undecided electorate that the pre-electoral survey of the CIS counts in the community, so that a good part of it was marked for mutual reproaches. In any case, as a general trend, the participants showed absolute respect for speaking turns and agreed time limits and there were few occasions when they spoke.

The debate, which lasted for about three hours and will be the only one of the campaign among all the candidates, had four blocks: health crisis, economic policies, social policies and institutional model, pacts, governance and the place of Galicia in the State . The first, the one related to the pandemic, was the most intense, but also the one that left a better mood on the part of all the candidates, who during the rest of the appointment hardened their speeches.

Feijóo reproached his opponents for "demagoguery" and "lightness" and, on the contrary, praised the "exemplary behavior" of the Galician people and the role of their government, presuming that they managed to be the first community to emerge from the state of alarm. Although he acknowledged that the Pedro Sánchez Executive faced a complicated situation, he did not hesitate to list his "improvisations" and wanted to make clear in his interventions that the 12J alternative is a majority of the PP to "govern from the first day" or " a multiparty of ten parties ".

Improvisation vs. demagoguery

Antón Gómez-Reino , from Galicia en Común, explained that "98% of the deceased Galicians died in privatized residences" during the Feijóo government, Gonzalo Caballero , leader of the PSOE, reproached him that the Xunta "endangered the de-escalation and Pancho Casal , from Marea Galeguista, appreciated that "the health personnel made up for the Xunta's incompetence with their efforts.

BNG leader Ana Pontón acknowledged that no government was prepared to manage an unprecedented pandemic, but she reproached Feijoo for mismanaging the outbreaks, as there are no protocols that "have had months to write", and "deficiencies" in the treatment of the elderly. Beatriz Pino , from Cs, wanted to look forward, "to what it is to build and not look back" and Vox spokesperson for A Coruña, Ricardo Morato censored the waiting lists.

Morato, who showed a lack of experience in public interventions and debates and was the only one who used Spanish in the debate, focused his criticisms more on the government of Pedro Sánchez at the state level - a "criminal government" - than on Feijóo, but he did He attacked him as "an outstanding student of the Government and of nationalism".

"In Galicia there was no loss of life. There was no improvisation," he defended, but the vision of the other parties is very different. All the leaders agreed in remembering the victims and praising the exemplary behavior of the citizens, and six out of seven, in criticizing a Feijóo. "Our country has been in quarantine for ten years , " reproached Gomez-Reino; to which Ana Pontón added the "capital error of ten years of cuts"; and Caballero the "lack of planning".

Alcoa monopolizes the debate

The block of economic proposals was monopolized by a war of figures in which the parties or managed to agree and by the situation of the Alcoa factory in San Cibrao (Lugo) , under the threat of closure. Feijóo defended before the other parties that "for eleven years I have been president of this Community and Alcoa has not closed", but Ana Pontón asked him more, that the Xunta "must participate" in a "public intervention" of the aluminum factory primary.

Antón Gómez Reino also defended a public intervention with the application of article 30 of the Statute of Autonomy and Gonzalo Caballero said that his intention is to preside over Galicia "to give him a new industrial policy" against the attitude of Feijó, who lives "in a happy arcadia where he lies with the data. "

The leader of Ciudadanos focused her proposals on the "middle class that is supporting the problems of our economy", the spokesperson for Marea Galeguista reproached Feijóo that his campaign slogan is "Galicia é moito", but "they should change it for a Galicia I can be a moito "and the leader of Vox proposes a tax reduction.

In the social policy bloc, all the candidates demanded the president of the Xunta de Galicia and a candidate for reelection and the reopening of day centers for dependent people, to which Feijóo replied that they keep them closed because "we want to take care of the elderly " and prefer" to have all the guarantees for the elderly and also for the children ".

The Vox candidate brought into the debate the tension that, according to his party, the rest of the forces are introducing in the electoral campaign, by "puppies of all the people who are here and who come to spit on us" to their actions and tried unsuccessfully for the other candidates to condemn the violence that they claim they are suffering. Only Citizens picked up the gauntlet and frustrated their attempt to monopolize the debate on this route.

Post-election coalitions

The debate on the institutional model and the post-electoral pacts gave Feijóo a list of the ten political parties that he claims would govern if the PP fails to win the majority to govern, and also wanted to reproach Vox for wanting to "kick him out" of the Xunta, while the leader of Ciudadanos insisted, as in the rest of the debate, that the BNG agreed with Bildu or Esquerra Republicana de Cataluña in other forums and reproached the other parties for corruption.

Both the BNG and Marea Galeguista claimed the only force that defends Galicia and Galicia En Común and the PSOE defended the need for a government of progressive forces because, in Caballero's words, "removing the PP from the Government is an urgency for the country "and, according to Gomez-Reino, a government" alternative to that of Mr. Feijóo with Citizens and with Vox is necessary.
