• Rally.Puigdemont calls on the separatist mass to wage "the definitive fight" against the State
  • Expenditure.Torra finances the Catalanization of Perpignan, the city that today houses Puigdemont

The French municipal elections this Sunday gave an indirect but hard setback to Carles Puigdemont , who will hardly be able to return to Perpignan to promote the separatist cause and his candidacy for president of the Generalitat after the far-right took over the Mayor's office of the alleged capital of Northern Catalonia .

The far-right Louis Aliot , candidate for National Rally (former National Front), won with 53% of the votes the Mayor's Office of this city located just 40 kilometers from the Spanish border - the largest governed by the Marine Le Pen party in two decades - and that on February 29 he agreed to host the massive rally in which the fugitive threatened the State to wage the "final fight" against Spain.

Puigdemont took advantage of the freedom of movement granted by his status as a MEP while the European Parliament resolves the request of the Supreme Court to end his immunity, but also the collaboration provided by the outgoing mayor of Perpignan, Jean Marc-Pujol -de Los Republicanos-, who not only authorized the rally that brought together 110,000 independentistas in his city when the threat of the coronavirus began to take shape, but also received a fugitive from the Spanish Justice with all the honors in the City Council, turning his visit into a ineffective act of campaign, in accordance with his defeat at the ballot box. The unemployment -14% compared to 8% national- and the poverty that plague this degraded population of the South of France led the members of the rest of the candidates to ask for the vote for Aliot in the second round, overthrowing Puigdemont's ally, mayor since 2009.

His replacement does not seem willing to carpet Perpignan so that Puigdemont continues to use it for partisan purposes, as he did in February, when he publicly defended that, by stepping on it, he had returned to Spain after his "exile". «I don't want Catalan problems to complicate our lives, that there are confrontations and independence people here in France. You have to be vigilant, "proclaimed the mayor of Perpignan in January in an interview with La Vanguardia, with the obvious intention that Catalan sovereignty would take note of what was coming in Northern Catalonia if the extreme right ended up prevailing in the elections municipal.

Perpignan will be governed by the French extreme right. It has not been possible to avoid it, ”Puigdemont lamented after learning the results of the local elections. The fugitive believed that he would return to the French town during the campaign for the Catalan regional elections, in which he will presumably lead the JxCat candidacy on a ticket with a new vicar. But he is already beginning to declare himself conscious that his strategy has been truncated with the victory of Aliot.

THE GENERALITAT BREAKS RELATIONS

The far-right triumph greatly alters the plans of the fugitive, who had ordered a redoubling of budgetary efforts to reinforce the fiction of Northern Catalonia . Not surprisingly, the House of Perpignan, headquarters of the Govern's embassy in the south of France, absorbed 147,000 euros annually until 2020, when it has more than doubled, specifically 393,000 euros, according to the Budgets that Quim Torra approved the last April with the support of ERC and the Commons.

This Monday, after the victory of the candidate from the far right, the House of Perpignan of the Generalitat has announced that it is breaking relations with the City Council and that it will stop celebrating the Day at the municipally owned Palau de Pams. "The election of a far-right mayor in Perpignan makes us rethink the good relations we had with the City Council," said delegate of the Generalitat in the city, Josep Puigbert.

The Catalan Government is forced to disassociate itself from the Consistory so that the independence movement does not link with the extreme right and Puigdemont loses a central piece for the internationalization of its secessionist project.
