The English city of Leicester soon confined? According to the Sunday Times , the government is preparing to impose confinement "within the next few days" in the city, where 658 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the two weeks preceding June 16.

The newspaper linked the increase in cases to an epidemic in food production factories and to large gatherings around restaurants offering take-out.

Screenings

Interior Minister Priti Patel, when interviewed by the BBC, said it was "true" that the government was considering local containment measures. "There will be support for Leicester and the Minister of Health has been in touch with many of us over the weekend to explain some of the measures," she said.

Four screening sites have been set up and thousands of home screening kits have been made available, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Health.

Concerns about the aftermath of the deconfinement in Great Britain

The next major step in deconfinement in England is the reopening on Saturday of pubs, restaurants, hairdressers, museums and cinemas, closed since the end of March. “Non-essential” stores already reopened in mid-June.

But many voices have been alarmed by the risk of a second wave of contamination, including representatives of the medical world who warned that "local homes are increasingly likely", in an open letter in the specialized publication British Medical Journal published Wednesday.

By gradually announcing the deconfinement, the government had warned that it could introduce restrictive measures locally, depending on the situation. "For outbreaks of local cases, it is appropriate to have local solutions in terms of infection control, social distancing, screening and many tools," said Priti Patel on Sunday.
