While metropolitan France has emerged from three months of confinement, the Covid-19 epidemic continues to progress in Overseas. Friday, June 26, the public health agency France (SpF) judged the situation "worrying" in Guyana.

In the border territorial community of Brazil, the number of cases compared to the number of inhabitants exploded with 308 cases per 100,000 inhabitants against 88 a week earlier, notes SpF. The same goes for hospitalization rates, especially in intensive care, which creates "tensions on the supply of care".

Restrictive measures

"The continuation of viral circulation calls for maintaining vigilance and continuing to adopt the recommended prevention measures", underlines SpF. The overseas territory has passed to "phase 3" of the anti-epidemic system, a classification which aims to limit the circulation of the virus with "strengthening of circulation restriction measures and the increase in screening capacities", according to the agency. . The prefecture of Guyana reinforced Thursday evening the measures of restriction to fight against the epidemic, by deciding the closing of the bars and restaurants on all the territory.

The controls have been tightened at the Iracoubo and Régina road control points, which "can only be crossed on presentation of supporting documents and no longer on the simple presentation of a certificate".

Twenty neighborhoods, in Cayenne, Kourou, Macouria, Matoury, Montsinéry, Rémire Montjoly, Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, will be targeted for "total containment". This type of containment, already deployed in particular in Saint-Georges-de-L'Oyapock and Camopi, on the Brazilian border, and in a district of Rémire-Montjoly, near Cayenne, "has demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing sharply the number of people affected by the Covid-19 ", explains the prefecture.

For a dozen municipalities, including Cayenne and Kourou, the curfew is reinforced and now extends during the week from 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on weekends from Saturday 1 p.m. to Monday morning 5 a.m. Crossing the border with Brazil, where the pandemic has killed more than 53,000 people and is on the rise again in certain regions, is also "completely prohibited".

State of health emergency

These measures respond to requests from the Minister of Overseas, Annick Girardin, traveling Tuesday and Wednesday in this territory of 300,000 inhabitants which remains under a state of health emergency until the end of October and where the peak of the epidemic is scheduled for "mid-July". The Minister has expressed reservations at this stage on a total reconfiguration of Guyana, but does not rule out using it if the epidemic continues to accelerate. On Friday, the territory had 3,461 confirmed cases, 105 hospitalizations, 21 patients in intensive care and 12 deaths, according to the prefecture.

A field hospital with 20 beds and an operating theater has been set up in Cayenne to take care of patients not affected by the virus as of Sunday and to relieve the pressure on the Hospital Center. A measure deemed insufficient by the president of the territorial community of Guyana, Rodolphe Alexandre: "As long as I do not see a Mulhouse-type hospital [installed by the armies at the height of the crisis in the Haut-Rhin] here with beds and additional resuscitation capacity, I will not be reassured, "he said on Saturday.

The French army sent an Airbus A400M on Friday to allow evacuations of patients from the Covid-19 from Guyana to hospitals available in the region.
