• The story behind the Francoist titles that Pedro Sánchez wants to withdraw
  • Tamara Falcó, pre-Marchioness of Griñón

The coronavirus crisis paralyzed most administrative procedures, which left many Spaniards with important steps to do. One of the issues that remained stagnant with the State of Alarm was the granting of noble titles. The procedure is always the same. When the bearer of a title dies, his distinction becomes vacant. Whoever wants to hold it, must request it from the Ministry of Justice, which then issues a settlement. Once the corresponding amount has been paid, the succession application is published in the Official State Gazette. A period of 30 days is given from the appearance in the BOE so that if there is any third party who believes that they have a better right to request the title, they can do so. Once that term has ended, the Royal Letter of Succession is published, signed by the Minister of Justice on behalf of the King.

This process, so simple, has been paralyzed since March, which translates into dozens of noble titles in limbo, without a testament to it. The last time letters of succession were signed was on February 20, when the duchy of Soma and the marquisates of Pescara, Casa Saltillo, Villapanés, Casa Estrada, Torreblanca de Aljarafe, Maratea, de los Ríos and Santa Cruz de Marcenado were granted . During the month of March, several edicts were published in the BOE with requests, that is, people who asked to hold an aristocratic distinction once the period of 30 days had elapsed from the publication in the bulletin but that the pandemic left with the title in the air. There were a total of ten.

The Duchy of Badajoz returns to the hands of the Casa RealGtres

It is five counties, four marquesados and a barony. Of these ten titles, probably the most popular are Areny County and the Casa Valdés marquisate. The first has been requested by Pedro Méndez de Vigo, brother of Rajoy's former Minister of Education, Culture and Sports. Before he was worn by his mother, who died in 2019. The other distinction that has occupied several pages in LOC is that which belongs to the in- laws of Esperanza Aguirre . The marquisate of Casa Valdés was part of the titles of the couple Ramírez de Haro and Valdés, parents-in-law and deceased of Esperanza Aguirre. After his death, the most important distinctions went to his son Fernando, husband of politics and second son of the marriage, while those of lesser value were his sister Beatriz , the first-born. It was she who on March 13 decided to cede to her daughter Isabel Alzor de Aragón and Ramírez the marquisate, which is not yet in her hands.

Four other counties remain in the same situation . The one in the Valley, the one in Bárcenas -whose last count owns one of the most important palace houses in Cantabria-, the one in Motrico and the one in Noroña. The latter belonged to Enrique Trénor Lamo de Espinosa, a member of the most important aristocratic family in Valencia. Upon his death without descendants he left three counties vacant and it has been Juan Antonio Pérez-Salas Sagrera who has applied for one of his titles.

The marquesados in the limbo are the one of the Tower of Esteban de Hambrán, in the hands of the descendants of Guzmán El Bueno; that of Alhendín de la Vega de Granada and that of Cartellá de Sabastida. Finally, the succession of the Perpinyá barony was requested.

VACANCIES

In addition to these ten titles, which are already published in the Official State Gazette, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed to LOC that in March two requests were requested for the succession of titles that began to be processed but whose publication in the bulletin has not been carried out because of the pandemic. The same official sources assure that "soon" they will be published for processing. So it is to be expected that normal title granting activity will soon resume.

When that happens, Tamara Falcó will be able to initiate the procedures to request the Marquesado de Griñón. Isabel Preysler's daughter will hold the distinction of her father, who died of coronavirus on March 20 and left that legacy to his third daughter in his last wishes.

On April 10, Alberto de Elzaburu Márquez died, who was Marquis de la Esperanza and Count of Good Hope . The next day Sebastián Cavero and Crespí de Valldaura, Count of Sobradiel, did it. The duchy of Pinohermoso is also vacant after the death on June 12 of Alfonso de Barrera and Pérez de Seoane Ducassi and Fernández-Villaverde.

The case of the Duchy of Badajoz is different. The title was in the hands of the Infanta Doña Pilar, who died of pneumonia on January 8. Far from inheriting any of his children, the title returned to the Royal House, since it is part of the distinctions held by the Monarchy and that Don Felipe can now decide what to do with it. Dona Pilar was awarded the duchy of Don Juan with the connivance of Franco, who days before his wedding in 1967, endorsed the title. The tradition marks that, until the wedding of the infantas of Spain, they do not grant them any title, so it will be necessary to wait for a future liaison of the little Sofia to know if the duchy of Badajoz will fall on their shoulders or if Don Felipe will choose another distinction for her.
