Johanna Rolland announces her re-election as mayor of Nantes, Sunday June 28, 2020. - S. Salom-Gomis / Sipa

Johanna Rolland is re-elected mayor of Nantes with 59.67% of the votes.

It is ahead of Laurence Garnier (27.6%) and Valérie Oppelt (12.7%).

Participation is even lower than the national average.

She came to announce her victory in a hectic town hall although relatively sparsely stocked for an election night, given the health context. It was then 10 p.m. and hardly more than half of the polling stations had been counted. But the difference in voice already allowed Johanna Rolland to consider without a shadow of a doubt the final score. With 59.67% of the vote at the end of this second round Sunday evening, the socialist candidate indeed obtains, at 41, a second mandate at the head of the town hall of Nantes. A success achieved after a late alliance with the environmental candidate, Julie Laernoes.

"It's a great satisfaction," says Johanna Rolland. The list that I lead is very widely in mind. Success clear enough to be legitimate. We will be able to translate concretely the social and ecological transition project that we defend. Our city can be a laboratory. When the left and environmentalists come together, we can carry this hope. Johanna Rolland also confirmed her first measure of the new mandate: to lower the prices of public transport subscriptions by 20% and to increase the entire city of Nantes to 30 km / h.

"This agreement was a choice of reason"

"Many said that our union on the left was an ad hoc agreement. The voters who came out demonstrated that it was mainly a choice of reason. We can see tonight that something is happening everywhere in France. Cities will play an important role in response to social and ecological challenges, ”comments Julie Laernoes (EELV).

Taken down at the end of the first round, the candidate of the Republicans, Laurence Garnier, knew that she would have difficulties to turn the tide. With 27.61% of the vote, it finally fails in second place, as in 2014. It will remain in the opposition but has promised to "continue working for the people of Nantes". The deputy Valérie Oppelt (LREM) finished, she, in third position with 12.71% of the votes. “I am proud to have kept myself and to have been alone with my team, without having followed political political agreements. "

The particularly strong abstention

All the candidates were moved by the level of abstention in Nantes (69.05%), higher than the national average, in a city where there was little suspense in the second round. “The figures are very worrying. It is also a message that we receive, ”comments Johanna Rolland. "It is a catastrophe for democracy and the elected officials that we are", considers Laurence Garnier. “We cannot be satisfied with having only 30% participation, recognizes Julie Laernoes. It forces us to build the city of tomorrow by involving citizens even more. "

Saint-Herblain also stays on the left

It is the third city of Loire-Atlantique, behind Nantes and Saint-Nazaire. In Saint-Herblain, where PS and Greens had not found common ground, the socialist Bertrand Affilé was re-elected by collecting 43% of the vote (32.7 for EELV).
