Pierre Hurmic, June 10, 2020, in Bordeaux. - UGO AMEZ / SIPA

Seventy-three years that the city was owned by the right. The result of this second round of municipal elections in Bordeaux, gave birth to a real earthquake this Sunday evening, even if we will talk for a long time about the level of abstention, also historic.

Pierre Hurmic, at the head of an EELV list supported by the PS and the PCF, obtains between 45.6 and 46.8%. The outgoing mayor Nicolas Florian (LR / LREM) is beaten with a short head (43.2-44.6%).

The fact remains that with the city center which falls into the hands of Pierre Hurmic and the Greens, the whole metropolis should switch to the left. The majority group Communauté d'Avenir, which held 63 seats, should only hold 32, since other municipalities, such as Saint-Médard-en-Jalles, have switched to the left too, and Alain Anziani (PS) was widely re-elected in Mérignac. The only satisfaction for the metropolitan right this evening is the re-election of a short head by Franck Raynal (LR) in Pessac.

With all these results, the PS should hold 38 seats in the metropolis, and the Greens a little less than 30. We will therefore have to wait to know how the two parties will get along now.

Note that the far left will also enter Bordeaux town hall, since Philippe Poutou (NPA) is expected to win three or four seats with its almost 10% of the vote.
