A communist stronghold falls. Mathieu Hanotin was elected mayor of Saint-Denis, this Sunday in the second round of municipal elections. He is only the sixth mayor of the city of Seine-Saint-Denis since 1944, but above all, he is the first city councilor not to be a Communist.

The socialist candidate was credited with 59.04% of the votes cast against 40.95% for the outgoing mayor PCF Laurent Russier.

In the first round, the PS candidate had overtaken his rival with 35% of the votes cast against 24%. In 2014, Mathieu Hanotin had failed to take Saint-Denis for a hundred votes.
