Paris remains on the left. The outgoing mayor, Anne Hidalgo, retains the town hall. During the 2020 municipal elections, the socialist candidate allied with environmentalists obtained this Sunday evening 50.2% in front of the candidate LR Rachida Dati (31%) and the LREM candidate, Agnès Buzyn (16%), according to first estimates. Building on the results of the first round and its green alliance formalized in early June with David Belliard, Anne Hidalgo, did not fail and thus geared up for a second term. She, who was still in difficulty several months ago, when the Walkers had made the capital a mission land, has managed to stay the course.

“We saw the resilience of Anne Hidalgo. Given a beaten a year ago, it waged a serious campaign, ”congratulated Jean-Louis Missika, co-director of his campaign , just before the second round, with 20 Minutes . But this victory also has a special flavor. It comes to an end to a campaign "unprecedented", "violent", "memorable", "scandalous", "rock'n'roll", according to the words of its actors. Punctuated by twists and turns against the backdrop of Benjamin Griveaux's sextape and pandemic, this crazy sequence was also marked by an in-between lap which stretched over more than 100 days. Anne Hidalgo, who entered the race late, followed her battle plan to the letter. And for good reason, everyone wanted to take their place and the misstep could have been fatal.

Storm

"Anne Hidalgo will lose in 2020", announced in February 2018 Florence Berthout, then leader of the LRI (Les Républicain et Indépendants) and opponent of the outgoing mayor, at a press lunch, organized a stone's throw from the 'City Hall. At the time, many of them stumbled upon Anne Hidalgo and on all subjects: cleanliness, Vélib ', Autolib', Christmas market, waterways on the banks. Nothing is going to listen to the opposition and everything is the fault of the same person. In addition, surveys at half mast (in an Elabe barometer for Les Échos and Classic Radio in February 2018, Anne Hidalgo collects 18% favorable opinions) and certain controversies (suspicions of fictitious jobs, ordering a report on cleanliness at 224,580 euros). In September, it was a blow to the bamboo: its first assistant, Bruno Julliard, slammed the door with a crash. The storm is thundering, Anne Hidalgo tries to hold the helm.

The city councilor intends to re-mobilize his troops. It brings back faithful from the first hour with it and refocuses on its citizens after sequences more oriented towards the international. Because the "Macron threat" is at the gates of the Castle, blew an internal source. "It can only be scary when we look at the Parisian results during the presidential election. She is aware that it will be difficult but she traces her path, without asking the question of who will incarnate this threat ”. ", We add.

The Renaissance

From May 2019, his troops are active behind the scenes. "The outgoing mayor must be the last person to enter the arena," repeats his entourage. While she is busy carrying out some of the last promises of 2014, her supporters get started and organize to roll out the red carpet for her when the time comes. As time goes on, the battle intensifies and the vapor slowly reverses. The city councilor stays away from short phrases, swarming applications and the LREM photo novel that plays out between Benjamin Griveaux and Cédric Villani. “Anne Hidalgo does not suffer from any competition for leadership in our political space. And our competitors are in an extremely fragmented universe so she has no interest in getting involved in all this, while it is a huge bazaar, ”explains Emmanuel Grégoire, his first assistant and campaign manager.

In January 2020, he declared in a brand new country room: “Everything is ready. The moment she wants to press the button, she can ”. Three days later, like Bertrand Delanoë in 2008 - then a candidate for his own succession - Anne Hidalgo chose to advertise in  Le Parisien. She launches into battle according to a calibrated and surgical plan, with the point ready. A "Blitzkrieg" campaign lights up.

" Go further "

For nine weeks, she continued with media and field trips by revealing "every day an element of her project", with a base: ecology. Under the colors of "Paris en commun", a movement which "brings together both women and men from the PS, the Communist Party, ecologists, Generation. s, centrists, humanists, but also Parisians who want to get involved ”, she says, she mainly focuses her campaign on the development of cycling in Paris, pedestrianization and reducing the space left to the car. Asked by 20 Minutes , four days before the first round, on the fight against pollution, she said: "We have to go further, even if we have come a long way".

A few days later, the campaign was stopped dead by the coronavirus crisis. She puts on her jersey as mayor of the city to manage the situation in the capital. She then promises masks to Parisians, then during the deconfinement, she requests the reopening of parks and gardens and calls to postpone the reopening of schools. In mid-May, it passed a 200 million euro plan to revive the economy and support employment in Paris. The opposition accuses him of a global "lack of anticipation".

The date of the second round found, she returns in early June in the campaign, hand in hand with the Greens for the final victory, which will be officially sealed in a few days. She will indeed be elected on Friday July 3 during a vote at the Paris Council, before embarking on a new six-year term, which should be, as she promised, even "greener" than the previous one in a context of post-covid social and economic crisis, however. This mandate will also be that of a historic event: The 2024 Olympic Games.
