Co-organized by the European Commission and the international organization Global Citizen, a world summit gathered dozens of speakers this Saturday to bring funds in the global fight against the pandemic and to ensure that the future vaccines thus financed would be distributed in particular to countries which cannot usually hope to be served as a priority. Among the participants, the UN Secretary General, the Director of WHO, Melinda Gates and dozens of Prime Ministers like Angela Merkel or presidents like Emmanuel Macron.

From our Brussels office,

Among the crowd of speakers at this summit, Angélique Kidjo or Miley Cyrus alongside the New Zealand Prime Minister or the German Chancellor. Alongside, so to speak, because this summit is virtual, pandemic requires, and many participants had recorded their message in advance.

Messages to announce new financial contributions or confirm announcements already made in the global effort to support research into the future Covid-19 vaccine.

And the results are up to par and have even exceeded expectations. The organizers initially hoped to raise seven and a half billion euros during the launch of the donor marathon in early May and according to the European Commission, this virtual summit made it possible to garner more than six billion euros in new pledges, which brings to fifteen billion nine hundred million the commitments of states, international organizations, businesses and charities.

Nearly twelve billion come from Europe, which underlines the vocation of this fundraising since this summit made it possible to decree in advance the allocation of more than 250 million doses of vaccines for countries with middle income or weak.
