In Mexico, the coronavirus continues its frantic race. After Brazil, Mexico is the second most affected country in Latin America. This week, it officially surpassed the 25,000 death mark and 200,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19. In the country, concern is growing in the face of a pandemic which seems to be out of control.

From our correspondent in Mexico,

In the capital, the optimistic reopening process started in mid-June has been slowed down. Restaurants and other shops remained closed for another week. A very meager measure for Andrea Vélasquez, 28 years old. There are a lot of deaths, it's worrying, even exasperating, because at the same time we are reopening everything. The authorities must start to be really more demanding,  ”said the young woman.

Mexico has bet everything on one indicator: the saturation of its hospitals. Despite a precarious system, the contagion was progressive enough to prevent their overflowing.

But spreading a pandemic is not controlling it, warns biologist Laurie-Ann Ximénez Fyvie. The only way to control this epidemic is to break the chains of virus transmission, " she explains. We must therefore multiply the tests. It would make a huge difference. In fact, this is the approach adopted by all the other countries. There is no easy solution… well, unless the authorities' idea is in fact to let the epidemic take its natural course, but that means letting hundreds of thousands, if not millions, die voluntarily. "

Mexico remains one of the least tested countries in the world, shoulder to shoulder with Japan, which does not believe in screening, and behind Pakistan and Bangladesh.
