More than 500,000 people have now been affected by Covid-19 in India, the government announced on Saturday June 27, as the peak of the epidemic is far from being reached. The country, which faces significant geographic disparities behind this symbolic course, has recorded a total of 15,685 deaths and some states are thinking of redefining themselves.

With 18,500 new cases announced by the Ministry of Health this Saturday, June 27, India has just exceeded 500,000 people infected with Covid-19 . Due to the lack of tests , these figures are surely higher, but this symbolic course marks the spirits.

Although still relatively small compared to the size of its population, this figure could double by the end of July. The peak of the epidemic is far from being reached, even though it can take an exponential turn .

Bombay and New Delhi account for a third of cases, Madras again confined

The situation differs drastically depending on the region. Bombay and New Delhi alone account for 150,000 cases, or almost a third of infections. The Indian capital has just opened a center of more than 100,000 square meters, accommodating 10,000 beds.

In the South, the city of Madras has opted for a new containment since Monday, June 22. More spared, the city of Bangalore could however take the same decision depending on the evolution of the situation.

India deplores 18,500 dead in total, again with great geographic disparities. In the state of Kerala, only 22 people died. Another figure further tempers this grim picture: the death rate in India is around 3% against 6% on average worldwide.
