Most of the Libyan oil fields and export facilities are located in areas under the control of Haftar forces, which is backed by Egypt and the UAE, and mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Company and Sudanese factions are fighting in its ranks.

An international agreement stipulates that the National Oil Corporation in the capital, Tripoli, should supervise the export of oil, and that its revenues go to the central bank there, where the headquarters of the internationally recognized national reconciliation government are located.

Libya has been witnessing in recent months a shift in the balance of power in favor of the Turkish-backed Al-Wefaq government forces, which managed to drive Haftar forces out of the Libyan West and thwarted its 14-month offensive against the capital. Al-Wefaq forces currently stand on the western outskirts of the coastal city of Sirte, which is controlled by Haftar forces and described as a gateway to the Crescent Petroleum.

Mercenaries in Sirte

Haftar’s forces have used the Russian Bansir systems in many of its recent battles, but the Turkish drones that support the forces of the Accord government managed to destroy these systems and neutralize their impact.

Al-Wefaq government forces say they are awaiting leadership directions to start storming the city of Sirte, and confirm that they recently monitored the arrival of mercenaries transported by Russian aircraft from Syria.
