• Interior. An internal order of the Civil Guard asked to collect hoaxes and 'fake news' "susceptible" to generate "disaffection" to the Government
  • Chronicle. The hunt for 'anti-government' hoaxes of the impeccable general Santiago

The Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, continues with his renovation in the dome of the Civil Guard. And now, as published by the BOE, he has appointed General José Manuel Santiago as Chief of Staff of the Civil Guard. Until now he occupied the bottom step, he was the second boss.

This general caused one of the most controversial controversies during the management of the pandemic by unveiling the order in the Civil Guard, during the coronavirus follow-up press conferences, to collect hoaxes "susceptible to generating social stress and disaffection to government institutions "

His words caused one of the most powerful political crises when considering the opposition that the Government was using the Civil Guard to investigate everything that was critical of the Executive's management in the pandemic. It was considered to be an attack on freedom of expression.

The general had to clarify his words after the order issued by the General Staff that corroborated those terms was even known.

The Interior Ministry plans to hold, with a month of delay, the act of taking possession of the new operational deputy director.

A month after the crisis began in the Civil Guard, the Ministry of the Interior has decided to visualize its renovations at the top with an act at the General Directorate of the Armed Institute. Next Monday, the Grande-Marlaska Department will hold an inauguration ceremony for the new Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Lieutenant General Pablo Salas, and the new head of Operations command, Félix Blázquez.

The crisis in this institution started on May 25, after the dismissal by Grande Marlaska of the colonel chief of the Madrid command, Diego Pérez de los Cobos for not providing him with information on the judicial investigations into the 8-M.

The dismissal of Pérez de los Cobos caused the resignation, the following day, of the Deputy Operational Director, Laurentino Ceña, whose departure from office was scheduled for June 3. The operations command, Fernando Santafé, also immediately resigned. These departures accelerated the renovation that, according to Grande Marlaska, it had planned to complete in June.

In a few troubled days, the appointment of Salas as the highest military officer of the Armed Institute and the appointment of Blázquez to take over the Operations Command. Rooms is a highly respected command throughout the Corps.

But between the pandemic and the crisis itself, the new officials had been left without a military act at the headquarters of the general management. Now, more than a month after the crisis started, the DAO will have its act before its own.

What is still to be named is precisely the replacement of General Salas in Information. In the last Council of Ministers, several promotions were agreed, among them, the promotion to general of Colonel Valentín Díaz Blanco, until now number two of Rooms in Information and current accidental boss. Everything points to the fact that it will be this new general, who has practically spent his entire career in the fight against ETA, who will take the reins of these anti-terror services.

The new DAO began his career as a lieutenant in 1981, after completing his studies at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza and the Special Academy of the Civil Guard.

Throughout these four decades of service, the lieutenant general has occupied various destinations, including the Vizcaya Command (Rural and Traffic), the Special Services Unit, the Secretary of State for Security, the Higher School of the Ceseden Armed Forces or the Madrid Zone.

In the year 1997, after 16 years of service, he was assigned to the Civil Guard Information Service, of which he has become the maximum responsible and where he has held different positions, especially in units dedicated to the fight against ETA.

Salas is in possession of numerous decorations, among which are the Commendation of the Order of Isabel la Católica, the Grand Cross of Military Merit with a White Badge, the Grand Cross of the Royal and Military Order of San Hermenegildo, the Cross of Naval Merit with white badge, various decorations of the Civil Guard Order of Merit in different categories, as well as the Police Merit Cross.

At the international level, it also has the Gold Medal for Different Public Security Services of Portugal, the Medal of Honor of the National Police, Silver Category, of France, the Bronze Cross of Merit of the Carabinieri Weapon of Italy or the Medal of WEU services.
