United States President Donald Trump issued a harsh warning to protesters trying to tear down statues, while some 400 US National Guard soldiers were deployed on Wednesday to protect Washington's monuments.

"Now they want to attack Jesus Christ, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson: that will not happen while I am here," Trump declared on the sidelines of a meeting with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, in the White House.

Trump also announced that he was going to sign a decree this week to punish those who attack America's heritage.

Several statues, including those of South Sudanese generals or supporters of slavery , were attacked during mass demonstrations against racism and police violence that have shaken the United States for almost a month.

On Monday night, outside the White House, a group attempted to tear down the statue of former President Andrew Jackson, an advocate of slavery. The national park police intervened and arrested several people.

The next day, Home Secretary David Bernhardt, who oversees this police force, asked the National Guard for help to prevent similar attacks.

In its request, the Pentagon " mobilized about 400 members of the National Guard " to prevent "the destruction or degradation of the monuments" in the capital, a spokesman for the Department of Defense, Chris Mitchell, told AFP.

At the moment, these soldiers remain "waiting". Should they resort to them, they will not be armed and will only serve as a "deterrence and crowd control force" to prevent access to some areas, according to the spokesperson.

Bernhardt ordered that barriers be erected in areas near the White House to protect public spaces, including the "Black Lives Matter" plaza near the White House. "We will protect these places with diligence and severity!" Bernhardt tweeted.

Trump's mention of the attack on Jesus Christ mocked the controversial tweet by African-American activist Shaun King on Tuesday. "I think that in the claim for the statues of white Europeans Jesus should also fall. They are a form of white supremacy. They always have been," he wrote.
