Water with blooming algae can go well to bathe in, but it can be unhealthy to swallow the water and one should shower in clean water after bathing.

- At present, we do not recommend bathing. Particular care should be taken to allow children and dogs to bathe, says Claes Andersson, environmental and health inspector, in a press release.

If you bathe among flowering algae there is a risk of skin irritation and eye problems. If you get enough algae water, it can cause symptoms of poisoning such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and possibly fever - both in humans and animals.

Extremely dangerous for animals

Normally, more than one cold soup is required and the risk is a little for adults to suffer, but if you get symptoms you should contact a doctor, the municipality writes on the website. Both domestic and wild animals can become seriously ill and die if they drink the water, so pets with symptoms should receive veterinary care.

The municipality regularly takes bacterial samples on the water at its bathing places, but the algal bloom is assessed visually in place because it can be changed quickly by, among other things, weather and wind. A sign will be erected at Sundstatjärn's bathing place about the advice from bathing, but also be urged to stay ashore if the bathing water in other places is cloudy or colored by algae.
