The US State Department said that Washington's representative to the United Nations, Kelly Kraft, and the US special envoy on Iran, Brian Hook, briefed the UN Security Council on a US draft resolution to extend the arms embargo imposed on Iran before it expires next October.

For his part, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Washington wants to expand the arms embargo on Iran and that it has the ability to act unilaterally, hoping that the Security Council will agree to extend the embargo on Tehran.

Meanwhile, Pompeo made it clear that Washington was ready to talk to Tehran at the appropriate time.

In the same context, US envoy on Iran, Brian Hook, said that Russia and China will face isolation at the United Nations if they continue to obstruct Washington’s effort to extend the arms embargo imposed on Iran, which is supposed to end next October under the nuclear agreement.

Hook told reporters that the two countries had previously faced isolation because of Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency, and they would be isolated in the Security Council if they remained in their position.

The American diplomat pointed out that the international ban did not prevent all of Iran's activities, but the ban on export and import was effective in obstructing its movements, he said.

Iranian response

On the other hand, Mahmoud Wazi, director of the Iranian President’s Office, described the US Secretary of State’s concern about the unjustified lifting of the arms embargo on Iran.

My preacher added that America should worry about arming some countries that commit daily massacres in Yemen. He pointed out that Washington is the one that threatens regional security by providing some countries with advanced weapons and turning the region into a powder keg.

In the same context, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Twitter on Wednesday that Iran and Venezuela will not retreat in the face of US sanctions, in response to the announcement by the US State Department earlier Wednesday to impose sanctions on five Iranian sailors who led oil tankers that transported gasoline and its derivatives to Venezuela .

Despite that, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani previously announced on Wednesday that his country is ready to dialogue with the United States if it apologizes and provides compensation to Tehran for its withdrawal from the nuclear agreement and lifted the sanctions.

Rouhani added - at the Iranian government meeting - that US President Donald Trump's statements about negotiating with Iran are not serious, saying, "But we know that the calls for dialogue with Tehran are nothing but words and lies."

The Iranian president demanded the International Atomic Energy Agency not to submit to what he described as US and Israeli pressure.

He said that his country will continue to cooperate with the agency, as long as it is independent in its decisions, criticizing the position of European countries towards his country, and warning them against moving within the framework of US policies against Tehran.

It is noteworthy that Iran has stopped since last year to abide by many of the main provisions of the nuclear agreement, in response to the US withdrawal from it and the re-imposition of US sanctions on Tehran.
