The images are spectacular. And the toll could have been even heavier. A Warsaw public transport bus dropped a viaduct on Thursday, leaving one dead and twenty injured, five of whom are in serious condition, local officials said.

"One person died and twenty were injured," Karolina Galecka, spokeswoman for the city hall in the Polish capital, said on twitter. "Five people are in serious condition," Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski told reporters.

A driver's discomfort?

The long articulated bus struck the barriers on a viaduct at the exit of a large bridge over the Vistula. The front part of the vehicle fell about five meters while the rear remained, leaning over the edge of the road.

According to the firefighters, discomfort from the bus driver is the preferred hypothesis.
