According to RIA Novosti, the appeal during the Security Council meeting was read out by the Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vasily Nebenzey.

The statement said that today more than ever, international cooperation and common steps are needed to advance the Middle East peace process.

“As an active member of the Quartet, Russia is ready to make every effort to launch direct Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in the interests of achieving a settlement on an internationally recognized basis ...”, Nebenzya read out the appeal of Lavrov.

Russia advocates negotiations between Israel and Palestine on the basis of UN resolutions, the Madrid principles, and the Arab peace initiative, which envisage the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with the capital in East Jerusalem.

Earlier, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called on Israel and Palestine to dialogue.
