Nearly half of the residents of Valltorp have died during the corona pandemic. But the infection also spread to the staff. According to sources with a view to housing, a majority of the regular staff has been ill. One of the votes: "Only a handful managed, 90 percent fell ill in my department."

According to Chief Operating Officer Ingrid Bergh, 35 employees were tested positive for covid-19 at the first test. That was over half the workforce of a total of 60 people.

How could this happen? Follow SVT's review of what went wrong.

Different opinions

According to Ingrid Bergh, Head of Operations for Health and Care Administration, the City of Helsingborg complied with all recommendations and hygiene practices. But she thinks it's hard to know how the infection came in anyway.

- Now we have the facts but in the beginning we did not know how seriously this could affect us, she says.

"Staff infected each other"

The care director Annika Andersson has her own idea of how the infection spread on the nursing home.

- The most likely should be that staff infected each other rather than being infected by a customer. When a customer becomes infected, we follow all the guidelines and procedures that exist, she says.

Why do you think this has happened?

- Staff sit in the staff room, sit close to each other, you take in different things. But I do not know. I'm not an expert, but that's how you talk, that's how I perceive that the discussions are going on.

When you say that's how you talk, what do you mean by that?

- It is infection protection in Skåne, Health Care. We have a lot of meetings, she says.

Infects in all directions

Infection protection in Skåne does not want to comment on the statement, but Eva Gustafsson, assistant infection prevention physician in Skåne, gives us a slightly different picture:

- I can generally say that covid goes in all directions. Accommodation can infect each other, staff can infect each other, the infection can go from accommodation to staff, and from staff to accommodation.

- When we discover an infection in a care home, it is very difficult to say how the infection first entered.

Employees give a different picture

When SVT goes through all the incidents from Valltorp's care home from April and May, we see examples of personnel without protective equipment coming into contact with care recipients, who later proved covid-19 positive.

It is the employees themselves who have reported the various incidents.

The municipal union is critical to the care director's statement about how the infection has spread between the staff and would like to see an investigation into it.

- It is remarkable that you put it on the staff, says Louise Ressner, work environment coordinator at Municipal.
