At the same time, the most anticipated result is that dementia residents are particularly hard hit. Distancing and isolation is a major difficulty in departments with dementia.

The survey also shows the following:

• The infection enters the accommodation on many roads, through staff, relatives and residents from other establishments.

• High sick leave has made a staff alternate between different homes and that new staff has come in. This has increased the risk of transmission.

• At the beginning of the epidemic there was some lack of protective equipment but also lack of confidence in the authorities' recommendations.

- Comprehensive training efforts have been carried out on, for example, basic hygiene routines. Housing is working intensively to avoid getting the infection in and reducing its spread, and this is a work that is continuing, says Peter Nolskog, assistant infection control physician.

All 49 municipalities in Västra Götaland have responded, but not all accommodations. The response rate is 81 percent. In total, 277 unit managers responded.

The criticism has been harsh on the care of elderly housing in the corona crisis. But several responsible doctors in Gothenburg give a completely different picture.
