The book, "The room where it happened", is released on June 23 and is described as one of the toughest cuts by a sitting president ever written by such a highly regarded former co-worker as John Bolton.

Between April 2018 and September 2019, Bolton worked as a national security adviser to the Trump administration. According to Bolton himself, he resigned - while Trump claims he was fired.

"The room where it happened" contains several embarrassing revelations about the president - for example, an occasion when Trump asked White House Chief of Staff John Kelly if Finland was part of Russia. But above all, Bolton emphasizes how incompetent and unpredictable Trump is as a leader - and what the consequences a second term of office could have for the United States.

"Presenting facts"

"What I've been trying to do is write 500 pages of facts that show how decisions were made by the Trump administration ... The main purpose is to present the facts and let people draw their own conclusions," said John Bolton in the interview with ABC News which aired on Sunday .

According to Bolton, Trump lacks understanding of the meaning of democracy and is driven only by meeting his own needs. John Bolton's view of the president is that his main focus is on being re-elected, and that actual politics is not a top priority.

- I think he was so focused on being re-elected that the idea of building something long-term became secondary ... There was a great focus on photographs and reactions from the press and there was little or no focus on what such meetings ( with foreign leaders) , editor note ) meant for the US negotiating position ... I think it became very clear to foreign leaders that they were dealing with a president who did not take these issues seriously, which has become a burden for us as a country , says Bolton.

"US position has weakened"

Bolton goes on to say that he believes the US has a weakened position overseas and that the Trump administration's successor will have a lot of "repair work" to do.

The former security adviser also commented on Trump's infamous quote about calling himself a "stable genius":

- How can anyone call themselves "stable genius"?
