Being passionate about ornithology can obviously be precious when you are a police officer. And this including when it comes to intervening in the home of a couple after a call for domestic violence, as was recently the case in Lyon 3e. A police crew went there and, as Le Progrès reveals , one of the men spotted an astonishing species of bird in a cage.

As the police suspected, it was indeed an elegant goldfinch, an endangered and protected bird. Its sale and detention are prohibited and a procedure has therefore been opened by the urban security brigade (BSU), which has had the identity of this bird confirmed by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB).

The search of the elegant goldfinch, given to the care center for wild animals of Saint-Forgeux (Rhône), took place Wednesday, while the owner of the bird was summoned to the police station to explain the violence. The OFB seeks to determine how the respondent obtained the bird, much sought after for song contests and which is the subject of traffic and trades between 80 and 200 euros, and even up to 1,000 euros for a couple.
