An informed source in the Sudanese army told Al-Jazeera that forces of the Ethiopian army and what he described as "Ethiopian militias" attacked the Sudanese army's Anfal camp this evening in the eastern Qallabat region in the border state of Gedaref border with Ethiopia.

This attack comes just one day after a two-day visit by Muhammad Hamdan Diqlo (Hamidati), Vice-President of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereign Council to Ethiopia, and discussed with officials in Addis Ababa issues of common concern, especially the issues of borders and the Renaissance Dam, according to Sudanese media sources .

The source said that the Sudanese army responded to the Ethiopian attack, noting that there was one casualty among the Sudanese soldiers.

A government source in Gedaref State also confirmed to Al-Jazeera correspondent that the clash included heavy artillery and machine guns and lasted for about two hours.

It is noteworthy that the region had witnessed similar clashes less than a month ago and killed and injured both sides, as well as the killing of five Sudanese citizens - including three children - in the Sudanese village of Barakat Noreen.

The Gedaref State government accuses Ethiopia of having systematic ambitions in Sudanese territory, and says it controls more than 3,000 square kilometers inside Sudanese territory.

In the wake of these clashes, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry expressed regret over the "incursion of Ethiopian militias" into Sudanese territory, calling for avoiding any additional tension and investigating the incident jointly, while Khartoum summoned the Ethiopian Chargé d'Affaires and informed him of its protest against the incident.
