  • Direct: last minute of the coronavirus pandemic

Pedro Sánchez has appeared this Saturday at the Palacio de La Moncloa to make a final balance of the 100 days of state of alarm, which will be met tomorrow with the definitive lifting of mobility restrictions.

In his last appearance in "this exceptional period", the Prime Minister has justified that no one could have foreseen the impact of the pandemic, and congratulated himself for having managed to "resist" the onslaught of the Covid-19 thanks to "social unity" and politics.

"We all ignored it," Sánchez argued, "but an unknown virus had already entered our lives silently long ago, coming from Asia without prevention systems across the continent being able to detect it."

"No one knew that we were on the verge of the greatest health, social and economic shock of the past 80 years," he insisted. "We were all unaware that it was just the beginning of a nightmare" and that the virus would "bait with the busiest nations, like ours."

With his sights set on the future, Sánchez has demanded that the opposition parties, especially the PP, "advance in unity", especially now that the European Union is going to promote economic recovery. "Spain must understand Spain," he said. "The useful thing is to join forces. The effective thing is to cooperate."

He has asked the PP, without expressly citing it, for an effort to "raise this country again from unity", and has given the example of voting on the minimum vital income, which had no vote against.

Abandon "the tension"

However, in his opinion, the opposition is not betting on that unity as much as it would like. "For a long time, the feeling that public opinion has is that this does not happen in politics. In Parliament it must dialogue. It is not an arena in which one should only fight. The only thing we must give up is the lack of respect, insult, threat, provocation, "he summarized.

For this reason, he has demanded to abandon "tension" to advance "on the path of understanding." "Above the differences does not unite the spirit of coexistence," he stressed.

Sánchez has framed that call for understanding within the negotiations on EU funds. "A new Europe emerges from the pandemic. This time Europe must save Europe, and not like it has happened before," he said.

In order to promote the agreements with the PP and Cs (those who "participate in the European ideal"), Sánchez stressed that "in the coming days" he will share with them the community negotiations. "And we will ask for active support."

Finally, Sánchez wanted to thank, among others, the health workers, the State Security Forces and Corps and the victims for their fight. And, especially, to the workers of the Ministry of Health.
