  • Pandemic: Coronavirus slows in the North but gallops in the South

On April 26, when Mexico had 14,677 cases and 1,351 deaths from Covid-19, President López Obrador acknowledged that: "We are doing well because the pandemic has been tamed, rather than being triggered as it has unfortunately happened in other parts. " 54 days after those unfortunate declarations, infections in the North American country have increased by 1,061% -up to 170,485 cases- and victims by 1,409% - up to 20,394-. Everything that has happened since then has allowed two obvious lessons to be drawn: Mexico has not 'tamed' the disease and the authorities have failed in all their forecasts.

Neither the undersecretary of Health, Hugo López Gatell, was right when he predicted that the country would reach the peak of the pandemic on May 8, nor more recently when he assured that this cap would arrive in mid-June. The figures continue to increase every day at a very high rate , 5,030 infections and 647 deaths according to the latest update, although the authorities clarify that, in fact, many of those cases are accumulated in the last week. The delay in the analysis and confirmation processes of Covid-19 has been one of the main obstacles in verifying the true progress of the pandemic in the country. Apart from the figures already confirmed, there are 62,245 contagions and 1,089 suspicious deaths pending study.

Three months under restrictions

Only essential activities have been able to continue operating with some normality during the last quarter, while the general population has been subjected to voluntary isolation without sanctions or time restrictions. After so long waiting and so many unfulfilled forecasts, the economic recovery and the return to normality becomes a matter of urgency for the 52 million people living in poverty and for the companies, businesses and restaurants that continue to debate between indebtedness or final closure.

As confirmed by health authorities on Friday, 15 states of the country must continue with all the restrictions in force. The news was a great disappointment for the inhabitants of the Valley of Mexico (where the Mexican capital is included), who expected, as promised, to move to the next phase next Monday. This change would have allowed, among other things, the opening of restaurants, hotels and churches at 30% of their capacity and of cinemas, theaters and gyms at 50%. Hospital occupancy is the main indicator used to evaluate the phase change and, in the case of Mexico City, it still stands at a high 70%.

A total of 17 states have managed to advance to the second phase, although there are others, such as Tabasco, that have had to back down and regain all restrictions after registering a severe increase in infections and hospital occupancy. The patience and resilience of Mexican society begins to languish in the face of evidence that several weeks of fighting a pandemic are still ahead, in addition to having left 20,000 victims, it now threatens to destroy millions of jobs and create 11 million of new poor in the country.
