Manhattan federal prosecutor since 2018, Geoffrey Berman had been appointed by the Trump administration. He has since overseen the indictment of Michael Cohen, ex-personal lawyer of the New York billionaire.

The Minister of Justice had announced by surprise Friday his resignation, causing outrage from the Democratic opposition. Shortly after, the complainant replied publicly that he had "  no intention  " to leave his post, despite this official announcement, and that he would not leave his post without making any noise.

Because you said that you had no intention of resigning, I asked the president to fire you today, and he did,  " said Justice Minister William this Saturday. Barr in a letter, published by American media, to Geoffrey Berman. With your press release last night, you chose the public spectacle rather than the public service  ," he added.

Geoffrey Berman also investigated the efforts of Rudy Giuliani, the president's current personal lawyer, and two of his associates to discredit Joe Biden, now Donald Trump's Democratic opponent for the November presidential election. The prosecutor was also still investigating another case against Rudy Giuliani, according to American media.
