• Racial Tension: California approves removing a statue of Columbus and Elizabeth the Catholic from its capital
  • Protests: when France did demolish statues in the name of history
  • Opinion, knocking down statues

The Golden Gate Park in the city of San Francisco (Californa) has been the scene in the last few hours of yet another chapter of the historical revisionism that prevails these days in the United States.

In the wake of the racial tensions following the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Rayshard Brooks in Atlanta a few days later, the statue-phobia has become yet another form of vindication that aims to destroy symbols that may be associated with racial repression.

In the last hours two of the affected monuments have been the statue of the Spanish and Franciscan missionary Fray Júnipero Serra and that of the writer Miguel de Cervantes, both in the aforementioned park. The first has been knocked down while the second has been painted with fascist symbols and the insult "bastard" (bastard, in English).

The images have been disseminated on social networks and from the Hispanic Council, an independent think tank that promotes relations between Spain and the United States, they have lamented the events. "We are assisting with the demolition of the statue of Fray Junípero Serra. Far from being a" genocide "or a racist, this Majorcan Franciscan represented the opposite," they said on their Twitter account.

The organization has also spoken about the graffiti on the statue of Miguel de Cervantes. "In a new nonsense we also see a bust of Miguel de Cervantes attacked in San Francisco. The culture, language, history and Hispanic heritage must be defended and respected."

Amid the racial controversy, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo branded hypocritical on Saturday a condemnation of "systemic" racism in the United States declared by the UN Human Rights Council.

Pompeo said the council should focus on what it called systemic racial disparities in countries like Cuba and China.
