The President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, assured this Friday that it was he himself, and not his cabinet, who ordered the release of Ovidio Guzmán , son of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, after a failed operation last October in Culiacán, in the northwestern state of Sinaloa.

"More than 200 innocent people in Culiacán, Sinaloa were going to lose their lives if we did not suspend the operation. And the decision was made, I ordered this operation to be stopped and this alleged criminal to be released ," López Obrador said in morning conference, referring to Ovidio Guzmán.

Until now, López Obrador had assured that, after the failed operation, with the capture and subsequent release of Ovidio Guzmán, it had been a decision of the security cabinet that he had seconded.

On October 21, days after the event, he explained at a press conference: "It was a decision of the security cabinet and I endorsed it. A ruler can put his life at risk but does not have the right to put the lives of the rest".

On October 17, 2019, Mexican soldiers detained Ovidio Guzmán at a home in Culiacán, which sparked a wave of violence throughout the city, where groups of hitmen caused shootings and fires, and released some fifty prisoners from a prison .

Upon being overcome by the situation, the Government of Mexico made the decision to release the son of 'El Chapo' under the argument that in this way the lives of the citizens of Culiacán could be protected.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE UNITED STATES

López Obrador made these statements after being asked by a journalist about the joint work with the United States in the fight against drug trafficking and the entry of firearms into the country. The Mexican president assured that now there is no longer "external interference" in the fight against violence, but there are "cooperative relations" with the United States.

"There are cooperative relationships, but at the same time of respect and the example is set, although it seems incredible, the one who sets the example is President Donald Trump," he said.

The capture and subsequent release of Ovidio Guzmán demonstrated the power that the Sinaloa Cartel still maintains in this part of Mexico despite the fall of one of its leaders.

El Chapo, who was considered the world's largest drug trafficker, is now serving a life sentence in the federal maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado, in the United States.
