In which countries outside the European Union will we be able to travel this summer? Response in the middle of next week. Europeans will publish a first list of around fifty non-EU countries with which the borders will be reopened, the French Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs said on Friday.

"We will finalize this in the middle of next week," said Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne on France 2, referring to "very intense work" and "coordinated" between Europeans. "The idea is to have perhaps a first list of fifty countries that have mastered the epidemic and for which we do not jeopardize the health security of the French, Europeans", said -he adds.

A list updated twice a month

The external borders of the EU and the Schengen area, closed since March 17 to combat the spread of the new coronavirus, are to be gradually reopened as of July 1. Intra-European borders have already been largely so since 15 June.

The list of countries will be established on the basis of "very objective epidemiological data such as the incidence rate" (number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and updated "every fortnight," said Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne.

He did not specify whether major destinations such as the United States or Canada would appear in this first list. He did suggest, however, that Latin American countries like Brazil should wait. "Latin America includes countries for which at the moment the virus is circulating very actively, one thinks of Brazil," he said.
