The United Kingdom will decorate the last four Liberation companions still alive, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday evening. Edgard Tüpet-Thomé (100 years), Daniel Cordier (99 years), Hubert Germain (99 years) and Pierre Simonet (98 years) will be made members of the British Empire (MBE) honorary, title which comes to reward foreign nationals .

This announcement comes at a time when Emmanuel Macron is to celebrate this Thursday in London the 80th anniversary of General de Gaulle's June 18 appeal. The French president must notably meet Prince Charles, then be received at Downing Street.

Honor "their sacrifice to defend us"

"80 years ago Charles de Gaulle, the leader of the French Resistance, arrived in London knowing that the values ​​of freedom, tolerance and democracy that Britain and France shared were under threat," said Boris Johnson in a press release. "The four men we honor today - Pierre, Edgard, Daniel and Hubert - symbolize the lasting strength and depth of the friendship between our two countries," he continued, emphasizing "their courage" and " their sacrifice to defend us and the whole world against fascism ”.

“The battles we face today are different from the ones we faced together 80 years ago. But I have no doubt that - by working side by side - the United Kingdom and France will continue to take up all the new challenges and to seize all the opportunities that arise, ”added Boris Johnson.
