Bad news for the planet: single-use plastic is back in force thanks to the health crisis linked to the coronavirus. According to an OpinionWay survey, 66% of French people today prefer food wrapped in plastic, for fear of being contaminated by Covid-19. However, assures Pierre Canet, director of advocacy for WWF France, "plastic is not a barrier" of protection against the virus.

Single-use plastics are making a comeback, thanks to the Covid-19 crisis ... And to the chagrin of the planet. Masks, gloves, cellophane ... They are everywhere. With the health crisis, and whereas the policy was, until now, with the elimination of these plastics, the old habits take again the hair of the beast. Witness the results of an OpinionWay poll for SodaStream, according to which two thirds of French people say they prefer packaged foods.

66%: this is the proportion of French people who wish to favor food products packaged in #plastic packaging as long as there is a risk of being contaminated by the virus, according to the survey we conducted with @opinionwayhttps: // t.co/u68bS8yWzR

"I know it's not good, but fear prevails"

"I have zucchini mushrooms, aromatic herbs and peppers!", Lists Fouzia, at the microphone of Europe. Food wrapped in plastic packaging that will end up in the trash as soon as Fouzia returns home. The packaging reassures her, she says. "I cannot buy without packaging so as not to catch the coronavirus because everyone touches it, and I am afraid of having it because it is transported and it is transmitted quickly".

Mask lifted up to the eyes, Morgana also gave up the bulk and got used to seeing his first fruit through a plastic screen. "It saddens me a little to use more plastic," she admits. "I know it's not good, but fear prevails and I will continue until there is improvement."

"Plastic is not a barrier"

"However, it would suffice to wash your hands regularly, to rinse your vegetables when you return from shopping," insists Pierre Canet, director of advocacy at WWF France. The latter warns: "we have a breach that opens". Also, he warns, "plastic is not a barrier and unfortunately, some industries have invested to suggest that this plastic could be a protection against the virus".

As for masks, plastic gloves, but also gowns, all these new polluters thrown here and there and already visible on the beaches, Pierre Canet requests that their collection be organized by the State.
