US imposes sanctions against Bashar al-Assad and his wife

As stated in the State Department, sanctions are imposed under the Caesar law, they became a continuation of political and economic pressure on Assad to combat "waging war and mass atrocities against the Syrian people."

The new list of sanctions includes Bashar al-Assad and his wife, Asma Asad. In total, 39 items are listed.

“The time has come to put an end to Assad’s futile, brutal war. Today, the Assad regime and those who support it have a simple choice: take steps towards a political settlement of the Syrian conflict in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 2254 or face new sanctions, ”said Pompeo.

At the end of May, the Council of the European Union extended the sanctions against the Syrian government for a year.
