17 June 2020 The appointment of Raffaele Cantone as prosecutor of Perugia has passed with 12 in favor against the eight who went to his competitor. In his favor, the progressive togas of Area and the laity of the whole political party voted, and it is the first time that has happened in this CSM.

The minority candidate, the assistant prosecutor of Salerno, Luca Masini, instead obtained the support of the togati of Autonomy and Independence and Independent Judiciary. Instead, the togates of Unity for the Constitution have abstained.

Di Matteo: "inappropriate choice"
"I believe that it is not appropriate for Canton to go to direct that power of attorney which is competent on hypotheses of crime committed by colleagues who work in the Rome offices and who may invest proceedings that in various capacities concern the relations between judges and politicians close to or belonging to the same political structure as decisive for the appointment to the ANAC ". The independent togato Nino Di Matteo said this during the discussion in the plenum of the Superior Council of the judiciary.

The reference is to the fact that the prosecutor of Perugia has jurisdiction over any investigations against Roman magistrates, as in the case of Palamara. Di Matteo, while expressing his esteem towards the former president of the anti-corruption authority, does not deny that Cantone at Anac '' has perfected its professionalism in the matter of fighting corruption, if only through relations with the prosecutors' ', but the point is that "we have a duty to decide according to the need to guarantee the appearance of impartiality towards the citizens. I - Di Matteo explained - I would have supported the candidacy of Cantone for a different Prosecutor, but not in Perugia.
