  • Sunday, a white march will take place in Nantes to pay tribute to Steve, who disappeared during a controversial police intervention on the evening of the Fête de la musique on June 21, 2019.
  • The prefecture authorized this white march, but not the demonstration scheduled for 6 p.m.

A year later, the drama is still very present in people's minds. A white march will take place Sunday in Nantes to mark the first anniversary of the disappearance of Steve Maia Caniço during a controversial police intervention on the evening of the Fête de la Musique, whose 2020 edition will be limited.

"The white march scheduled for 3 p.m. and which has been duly declared in the prefecture is authorized in compliance with the sanitary measures linked to the Covid-19 epidemic," said the prefecture in a statement.

Three judicial investigations are in progress

Relatives of Steve Maia Caniço wish to pay tribute to this 24-year-old extracurricular presenter, who disappeared during an electro party on the Loire river during the night of June 21 to 22, 2019. His body was found drowned in the river more a month later.

Over the past year, the young boy has become a symbol in Nantes, where the slogan "Justice for Steve" has resonated in several events. Three judicial reports are investigated in Rennes to shed light on this late evening during which tear gas had been fired and several other people had fallen into the water.

The prefecture prohibits "musical gatherings on the public highway"

The prefect also specified that he "issued a decree prohibiting the undeclared demonstration scheduled for 6 pm" on Sunday. On Facebook, an event announcing the authorized white march was launched specifying that the procession would go as far as the Wilson wharf, place of Steve's disappearance, where a fence and some barbed wire were recently installed, now preventing access to the banks of the Loire.

On this Music Festival evening, "you can keep moving after arriving at the dock ..." promises the text. But the prefecture has indicated that the Fête de la Musique this year will not be able "to take the form of musical gatherings on the public highway since this type of gathering is not compatible with respecting physical distance and barrier measures" .

More specifically, a prefectoral decree prohibits "festive gatherings of a musical nature such as a rave party or teknival", as well as "the circulation of heavy goods vehicles carrying sound equipment", "the sale of take-away alcohol" and the sale and the use of "entertainment devices".
