• Gender-based violence: Mar's hell with 20 years: daily beatings of her ex-boyfriend, insults and two attempts at suffocation
  • Pandemic: calls to 016 increase during the alarm state by 41.4% compared to 2019

E l Observatory against Domestic Violence and Gender of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has released Wednesday a statistical report analyzing sexist crimes in Spain from January 2003, the date on which they began to be counted the dead women at the hands of their partners or ex-partners, and on April 20, 2019, the day the thousandth victim was murdered.

The study confirms that motherhood is one of the circumstances that increase the risk for victims of gender violence. Three out of four women murdered between 2003 and 2019 (75.2%) were mothers and in half of the cases (49%) the children were minors. The thousand murdered women orphaned 765 minors, of whom 499 were sons or daughters of the aggressor and the remaining 266, the result of previous or subsequent relationships of the victim, according to the documentation analyzed.

In addition, the Observatory against Domestic and Gender Violence, chaired by María Ángeles Carmona , highlights that just over a quarter of the thousand women murdered during the period of time analyzed had reported their aggressor. However, the percentage of cases with prior reporting has been increasing over the years since it ranged from 15.8% in 2005 to 34.5% registered in 2014.

On the other hand, the analysis of the CGPJ shows that coexistence with the aggressor is another factor that increases the risk to the lives of the victims, since 60.5% of the thousand women murdered maintained coexistence with their executioner in the moment in which the events occurred.

75% of murders at home

Furthermore, the study shows that the place where murders occur most frequently is the home. In the analyzed period, 75% of the deaths occurred inside a home, in the case of the shared dwelling between the victim and the aggressor in 70% of the cases. During those 16 years and four months, there was one sexist murder every week and an average of 61.3 fatalities each year.

"If we compare the annual average of fatalities, they went from 68.3 women murdered each year between 2003 to 2010 to 54.4 between 2011 and 2019. This data allows us to harbor some hope and shows that Spain is working in the right direction but at the same time, it indicates that we cannot let our guard down, "said Ángeles Carmona.
