China News Agency, Washington, June 16 (Reporter Shahan Ting) The Democratic leader of the House of Representatives of the United States Congress announced on the 16th local time that it will vote on the 26th of this month on whether to set the capital Washington DC as the 51st state in the United States.

House Speaker Pelosi, House Majority (Democratic) leader Hoyer, and Washington Mayor Bowser jointly held a press conference to announce the news. Pelosi said that the current situation of Washington residents is "unjust, unfair, undemocratic, and unacceptable," and this vote will become "a historic vote."

Bowser said that setting Washington as a state is the "only way" to grant Washington residents the entitlements of American citizens. Only when Washington becomes a state can residents of Washington elect members of Congress representing their own interests, and national guards from other states cannot enter Washington without Washington’s consent.

Recently, US President Trump used the National Guard to disperse peaceful protesters outside the White House in order to go to a church near the White House, which caused strong dissatisfaction among lawmakers and the Washington public. Bowser believes that Trump's approach is the federal government's intervention in local government law enforcement, which further highlights the urgency of establishing a state in Washington.

Hoyer also said that now is the "appropriate time" to vote on the establishment of a state in Washington to give Washington DC residents "the respect and rights they deserve."

The capital, Washington, DC, has more than 700,000 residents, but it has no seats in the Senate or House of Representatives. If Washington is set as a state, Washington will receive 2 senator seats and 1 senator seat.

At present, more than 200 members of the House of Representatives have expressed support for the establishment of a state in Washington, DC. The resolution has been determined to be passed by the Democrats-controlled House of Representatives. Many Republicans in the Senate opposed the resolution.

Trump recently said, "Will never allow Washington DC to become a state, which will never be achieved."

The residents of Washington DC are mostly African-Americans and have always belonged to the Democratic camp. The House of Representatives voted on the establishment of a state in Washington, DC in 1993, but failed to pass it. (Finish)
