Faced with criticism from opposition groups, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran assured "that at least one billion euros" more would be earmarked to finance "the loss of autonomy" of the elderly and disabled as of this fall, in the "Secu" budget for 2021. The deputies voted this text at first reading at the same time as a consequent increase of 136 billion euros in the "hole" of Social Security, after the coronavirus. The bill must now be considered by the Senate. If it were introduced, this fifth branch would cover the risks of life linked to loss of autonomy and disability. It would be added to the four existing ones (illness, old age, family, work accidents).
"We are laying the cornerstone of the long-awaited and repeatedly announced reform of the loss of autonomy," said Secretary of State Adrien Taquet. "In 2040, almost 15% of the French population, 10.6 million, will be 75 years old or more. This is twice as much as today," he said. For the time being, the details and precise financing of this branch are referred to a report in mid-September.
