China News Service, June 16 (Xinhua) According to the European Union quoted the European Union News Agency, around 15 am local time, a fire broke out in the ancient Panagia Varnakova monastery in the Fokies region of central Greece. Part of the buildings and precious idols of the 11th-century ancient monastery were burned.

  According to reports, this monastery was built in 1077 and is located in the Valducia Mountains about 25 kilometers northeast of Nafpaktos.

  The local fire department said the fire ignited from the roof of the monastery and then spread quickly. All personnel in the monastery were quickly evacuated, with no casualties. But the fire destroyed some buildings, and also burned ancient gods that were regarded as treasures of the town house.

  Capitolis, the mayor of Dorida, where the monastery is located, said the fire had also posed a serious threat to nearby forests.

  According to reports, this was not the first disaster encountered by the monastery. In 1995, there was an earthquake in the area that caused some damage to the monastery. In January 2017, the monastery also had a fire and burned the library. (Lin Jingyi)
