- It has been a nightmare we have been living in. It makes it painful to know that he was lying there on a cold floor in his cell and has died of thirst. It's surreal, says Ali's sister.

Three years have passed since her brother died while traveling to the emergency room. The cause of death was to be determined for dehydration.

Ali was arrested on suspicion of robbery in April 2017. During his detention, he was severely affected by mental illness. He refused food and threw food and drink around him. The water in his cell was also turned off because he let it flood. After just over two weeks at the Sollentuna detention center, he was dead.

The chief was released in the district court

The detention officer was charged with negligence for another person's death and malpractice because the prosecutor said he should have responded and made sure the 23-year-old received the necessary care. But Attunda District Court freed the chief on both points.

"Other things are not investigated except that (the detention officer) could assume that (Ali's) health was not in danger and that he got food and fluid," the judgment states.

Prosecutor: "Should have received care"

The district court's judgment was appealed and on Wednesday comes Svea Court of Appeal.

- He should have been taken care of, something should have happened. On the staff side there was frustration as they felt that the manager knew about it but did nothing, says prosecutor Fredrik Ingblad.

The lawyer: "A unique event" Photo: Sebastian Comar Alm

Detention Chief Defender Fredrik Zettergren does not believe that the High Court will change the previous sentence.

- It is a tragic event for everyone involved. But we have a district court judgment in the back that is well motivated, they have gone to the bottom of it. The High Court has essentially assessed the exact same material, he says.
