The data on deaths and burials demonstrate that the health emergency caused by Covid-19 is receding strongly in Spain . Burial licenses in Castilla-La Mancha have collapsed last May, 63.1% over April figures, the worst month of this pandemic in Spain.

These data are partial and only correspond to the La Mancha region, since the Ministry of Justice does not yet have national statistics for national data. But they are very significant because Castilla-La Mancha has been one of the regions hardest hit by the health crisis.

Still, of the total 1,439 burial licenses in May, 31.7% of them correspond to deceased victims of the coronavirus or suspected of having died from Covid-19, although without diagnostic evidence.

The data, compiled by the Superior Court of Justice of Castilla-La Mancha offer very curious aspects. In May of this year, deaths compared to the same month of 2019 fell by 10.8%. This means, as interpreted by regional government sources consulted by EL MUNDO , that in March and April many elderly people or patients with other ailments died, also attacked by the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. This advance in deaths has resulted in mortality in May, a month in which the health emergency is over, even lower than in a normal month.

Autonomous Government sources explain to this newspaper that these figures demonstrate that "the health emergency has slowed down substantially" in the region.

Taking as a reference the three months in which this crisis has had the most incidence -from March to May-, deaths from Covid-19 and Covid suspicions account for 58.2% of the total deaths. Out of a total of 8,799 deaths, 5,125 are likely due to the disease originating in China .

Posting in the registers

The registries record as suspicion of death by Covid-19 those cases in which this suspicion is included in the medical certification or in cases of lung pathology compatible with this disease.

All this information has been forwarded to the TSJ by the civil registries and the courts of peace of the five Castilian-La Mancha provinces.

Last April, the TSJ of Castilla-La Mancha detected that deaths from coronaviruses in the region were much higher than the official deaths, which only count as positive deaths by Covid, those who have a positive diagnostic test.

Castilla-La Mancha has been - together with Madrid, Castilla y León and Catalonia - one of the regions with the most infections and deaths from Covid-19. By provinces and also according to data collected from civil registries, the most affected has been Ciudad Real, with 1,905 deaths from this disease between March 1 and May 31. It is followed by Toledo , with 1,181 deaths from the pandemic and Albacete , with 1,016.
