• 'Morodo case': Zapatero's ambassador in Venezuela diverted money 'off shore' to the vice presidency of Hugo Chávez
  • Justice: Chavismo gave 35 million to the plot of Zapatero's ambassador in Venezuela
  • Profile: Raúl Morodo, Chavismo at all costs

The PP demands "a thorough and urgent investigation" on the possible diversion of money from the former Spanish ambassador to Venezuela during the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, Raúl Morodo , to the Government of Hugo Chávez, and to find out "what the relationship is that existed and exists between the PSOE and the "Venezuelan dictatorship.

He did so after EL MUNDO revealed that Morodo and his family made payments from their accounts in Switzerland and the Virgin Islands to the right hand of Hugo Chávez's vice president, José Vicente Rangel , in 2004, a period in which he was one of the pesos heavy of the Bolivarian Executive.

These operations took place after the Morodo family received significant amounts from the Venezuelan Government, in the form of consultancies that the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor and the Treasury consider fictitious.

They are accused, in an open case in the National Court, of crimes of false documentation, corruption in international transactions, money laundering and against the Public Treasury.

The secretary of PP International, Valentina Martínez , stressed that her party is going to ask that the responsibilities of the former Prime Minister be cleared if this information is finally confirmed by the courts. And she asked herself "what is the relationship that existed and exists between the Socialist Party and the dictatorships of Chávez and [Nicolás] Maduro".

The PP remembers the 'cas' Delcy'

In addition, Valentina Martinez pointed out that "this information can have very serious consequences, since the current Government of Spain has been tiptoeing for months because of the political situation in Venezuela, as it has tried to do with the controversial meeting of the Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, José Luis Ábalos, at the Barajas airport with the vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez ".

Zapatero has disassociated himself this Monday, in an interview with Cope , assuring that he neither knew nor maintained a "special relationship" with Morodo. The former Prime Minister denied knowing anything about this case and defended that Morodo was "just another ambassador" for him.

"But he was the ambassador of my government, I will not avoid this." "Let Justice act and all responsibilities be established clearly," he said.

But the popular deputy thinks that a connection between him and the leaders of Venezuela can be confirmed. That "would be one more reason to believe that the PSOE has supported and is supporting the dictators Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro in their own interest," he said.

"Once again, the image and prestige of Spain in Latin America and in the world is at stake, it is very important that it be investigated to the end, with maximum procedural transparency, and that all responsibilities, policies and penalties ", insisted Valentina Martínez.

The PP wanted to reiterate last night its "commitment to the Venezuelan democratic forces as well as to democracy, freedom and respect for Human Rights in Venezuela."
