Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer announced on Europe 1 on Monday that the very strict health protocol governing schools would be amended to allow all students to return to school, announced Sunday by Emmanuel Macron. "We ask the teachers to put a circle in a square ...", reacts the general secretary of the SNUIpp-FSU to the microphone of Europe 1.

INTERVIEW

Sunday in his speech, Emmanuel Macron announced the resumption of classes Monday, June 22 in nurseries, schools, colleges "on a mandatory basis and according to the rules of normal presence". To allow this return, the Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, confirmed Monday on Europe 1 that the very strict health protocol which currently governs schools will be amended from Tuesday. "A magic promise, difficult to implement on the ground ...", comments Francette Popineau, secretary general of the SNUIpp-FSU, for whom "many questions still arise."

"We are not going to save so much space"

"The fundamental relief will be that of physical distancing which will now be less restrictive," explained Jean-Michel Blanquer. It will be necessary to respect a distance of "one side meter between each pupil", and not more than 4m2 per pupil.

But "by maintaining a meter distance between each table, we will not save so much space", points out Francette Popineau. "Especially if you have tables with two seats, as is the case in many schools, where you can only install one child, but which take up a lot of space." The number of toilets is also insufficient in many schools, she adds.

"We ask teachers to put a circle in a square"

Francette Popineau welcomes the return of compulsory education, "always a good thing", but regrets that it applies full time, and not a few days a week, in order to be able to welcome students in turn. "There will be discontent, incomprehension. Some will feel that the teachers are not there ... While they are present, they have never stopped being. But we ask them to put a circle in a square, "she said.

Teachers will not however exercise their right of withdrawal, says Francette Popineau. "They were afraid, like everyone else, which is legitimate", she maintains, recalling that "the virus is still circulating in France". "The more children there are in a school, the more adults there are, the more there are chains of transmission", she underlines, before concluding: "It is necessary to be able to take care of the children entrusted.
