• New stage: Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero shield themselves in Podemos with their core of trust
  • Politics Pablo Iglesias has more than half of the regional directorates of Podemos named by finger

A year ago, Podemos experienced an unprecedented situation. After the crisis caused by the escape of Íñigo Errejón and his management, a territorial counter-power was articulated in the formation where for the first time the party's territorial leaders made their opposition to Pablo Iglesias's way of doing and strategy visible. Today, Podemos is preparing to bury any attempt at parallel authority, criticism that jeopardizes the leadership of the Secretary General, with the election of 11 autonomous divisions. In nine of them, the national leadership endorses official candidates.

Podemos is immersed these days in voting to choose autonomous coordinators, and their respective addresses in Andalusia, Aragon, Cantabria, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Community of Madrid, Valencian Community, Extremadura, Murcia, the Basque Country and La Rioja . They are all key communities for the national leadership, since they are the ones that have shown the most distance, discrepancy and rejection of Madrid's control over all their action.

For a long time, the relationship with these territories -many with management for the departure of the leader or for the end of his mandate- was distant, tight or even null. Hence, the claim of the dome for a long time is to place related. The leaders of these communities staged a conclave in Toledo where they wanted to "empower themselves", "create a balance of power" and achieve "autonomy so that not everything is decided from an armchair in Madrid." Andalusia, with Teresa Rodríguez at the forefront, has been the maximum expression of this coexistence in permanent confrontation.

Although autonomy and the ability to articulate pacts and political decisions were preached from Madrid, more and more voices denounced permanent "interference", both in strategic decisions and in electoral negotiations. The focus was on the entire cupola and, especially, on Pablo Echenique, then Secretary of Organization. This is borne out by conversations between these territorial leaders to which this newspaper has had access.

«It is outrageous what Echenique is doing from Madrid. He is working to destroy us at the territorial level, ”was one of the accusations; in this case, poured out by Nacho Escartín , former leader in Aragon. From the top they accused these leaders of "working to break with the common project of Podemos."

One of the high points of that dispute was carried out by Ramón Espinar, who resigned as leader of Madrid in disagreement with the management of the leadership in the crisis by Errejón, by publicly championing that there was an alternative to the Podemos of Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero.

To undertake this sort of reconquest, the internal machinery has worked to articulate official candidacies, hand in hand with the directives of the team of Churches, in eight of these regions. Under the initials of Un Podemos Contigo , with which Iglesias has already revalidated the General Secretariat in the state assembly, at least Javier Sánchez (Murcia), Pilar Lima (Valencian Community), Jesús Santos (Madrid), Martina Velarde (Andalucía) appear , Conchi Abellán (Catalonia), Pilar Garrido (Basque Country), Maru Díaz (Aragón) and Arantxa Carrero (La Rioja).

Of these eight candidates, six -all except Díaz and Carrero- are part of the State Citizen Council , the highest management body between assemblies, as they were on the list of Churches. One more example of the armor that it seeks: to have all the autonomous communities under control.

They are joined by Irene de Miguel Pérez , candidate to lead Podemos Extremadura , who, although she does not use the Un Podemos Contigo brand, has the full support of the Iglesias team and, in fact, is part of the Executive Commission, a new body Podemos has created as an intermediate step between the Executive - hard core - and the State Citizen Council.

Despite the fact that in these 11 Autonomous Communities there are around thirty candidacies, it is difficult to surprise when the machinery of a party starts up. Hence, in Podemos, they take it for granted that Churches will now see their expectation of having all the territories complying with their guidelines fulfilled.

From regional secretaries general to coordinators

One of the changes for Iglesias in his new stage after being re-elected as Podemos leader is to devalue the nomenclature of territorial leaders. To begin with, it has decided that, instead of autonomous general secretaries, they should be autonomous coordinators. An important nuance regarding the entity of the position and what is wanted from Madrid: they will coordinate what the management says, they are not leaders with their own entity.

For the avoidance of doubt, in its political document, Podemos makes its mission clear: “The person who occupies it coordinates its activities, ensuring the strategic coherence of its political discourse and action, as well as the coordination and strategic coherence with Podemos at the state level. ».
