The key to the problem. This Monday afternoon, many police gathered in front of the gates of the northern prefecture to protest against the ban on the use of certain arrest techniques. A decision taken a week ago by the Minister of the Interior, Christophe Castaner, following the demonstrations against police violence.

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, affirmed, Sunday evening, his support for the police. A speech that did not fully convince: "It's heavy to see that we are not supported," laments Jean-Philippe Ringot of the union SGP Police union. Under the windows of the representative of the State in the North, with around 250 of his colleagues, he denounced government announcements "made in a hurry" because of "media coverage. "Obviously, the demonstrations in France in recent weeks against police violence that echo the death in the United States of George Floyd.

"The arrests will end in street combat"

The point of blocking is the prohibition now made to the police to use the technique of the "choke key" during an arrest. A technique whose name does not dream: “It has been used in the police for 30 years without any particular problem. There, we take it away without giving us anything instead, ”regrets the policeman. For him, however, it is the only way to challenge a recalcitrant person: "The gesture should only last a few seconds, the time to bring the individual to the ground and to handcuff him. Nothing to do with what happened to George Floyd who suffered this for several minutes, "says Jean-Philippe Ringot.

For another police officer, replacing the throttle key with the use of an electric pulse gun is foolish: “It is no less dangerous, even worse. Imagine the consequences on a person with heart problems, ”he protested. Suddenly, the police feel helpless to control people who rebel. "With the ban on the throttling key and for fear of using the Tazer, the arrests will end in street combat," said an official. "When in doubt, what are we going to do if we feel in danger?" We are not going to arrest an offender, ”asked another police officer.
