The mayor of Marseille Jean-Claude Gaudin reaffirmed Monday in La Provence his support for Martine Vassal, candidate Les Républicains (LR) for his succession, despite the opening of a preliminary investigation into possible proxy fraud on the LR side, denouncing a " bad controversy ”.
"I hope that the justice system and the police will quickly demonstrate the validity of the powers of attorney registered by the city of Marseille. The black legend of political life in Marseille is enough, "says Jean-Claude Gaudin, mayor of the city since 1995.
"This bad controversy must not distract voters from the real issue and the choice they have to make for Marseille and its future," he continues, less than two weeks before the election. In the first round, Martine Vassal had the bitter surprise of being doubled over the whole of the city, where the vote took place by sectors, by the candidate of the union of the left, Michèle Rubirola (23.44% votes against 22.3%).

"I support the one who, by her will, her dynamism, and her experience best embodies the future of our city (...) I therefore fully support Martine Vassal and her running mate," he adds.
Jean-Claude Gaudin also flouts the project of the left-wing coalition led by Michèle Rubirola, united under the name of Printemps Marseillais, which he believes that “inexperience, incompetence and intolerance cannot constitute a credible alternative for second city in France ”.
After the revelations of the weekly Marianne and France 2 on proxy collection practices that did not comply with legal rules, the prosecution opened a preliminary investigation entrusted to the judicial police, and a search took place on Saturday morning at the local campaign by Martine Vassal, current LR president of the city and the department.
