The Minister of Education, Isabel Celaá, has refused this Monday to accede to the requests of the autonomous governments and to change the only mandatory measure in her protocol of protection and hygiene measures to return to the classroom in September. Up to eight regional presidents have rebelled because they consider the requirement to keep 1.5 meters between students "unfeasible" and "impossible to meet" and demand that the separation be reduced to one meter.

One meter is the distance recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and also that which has been followed by countries like Belgium. The socialist barons of Aragon and Castilla-La Mancha and also the popular ones of Galicia , Andalusia and Madrid demanded this Sunday during the Conference of Presidents to stick to this measure, because they believe that it is enough to guarantee safety in school spaces. The Balearic Islands , Catalonia and the Basque Country , for their part, ask that it be the communities that can specify their regulations without interference from the central government.

On the contrary, the Canary Islands , the Valencian Community , La Rioja or Murcia support working on the design of contingency plans under the premise of that meter and a half, a measure that has divided the de-escalation school in two. Teachers, meanwhile, want to maintain the greatest possible distances and ratios.

"Our epidemiologists are not in a position to change distances from 1.5 to one meter," Celaá warned the autonomies, in an interview with RNE. You have recalled that these indications are "prescriptions"; that is to say, of obligatory compliance, since they are included in a royal decree that this week will be validated by Congress .

The meter and a half is, in reality, the only thing required by a protocol drawn up between Celaá and the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa. On Thursday, during the Sectorial Conference on Education , the minister warned that if there is a counselor who does not respect this distance in his regulations, "he will be breaking the law."

"With the calculations that we have made from the Ministry, if we optimize all the spaces that the center has they can fit" all the students taking into account the distance of 1.5 meters, Celaá has assured, although he has recognized "that there may be exceptions "

The president of Aragon, the socialist Javier Lambán , argued this Sunday, on the contrary, that with this separation between the students they would not have enough classrooms and this would force them to hire more teachers, for those who do not have resources. The other option is to organize a system of rotating shifts with some students at home and others at school, but all the autonomous regions except Madrid and the Basque Country have signed an agreement so that teaching in September is 100% face-to-face for all students.

The second big problem facing directors with Celaá is the drop in ratios, which also requires hiring more staff. The Government wants to form groups of up to 20 students per teacher, but Aragon has already warned that up to 23 students will arrive in its territory. This measure is not mandatory and the minister opens up to more "flexibility". Remember that she works on the provision of "some alternative space" to solve space problems "in those centers that are more full", although with the idea that the "older students" have to move from their usual classroom.
